FISHING

The Jefferson in Whitehall, Montana - adventure begins here!

Reminder: March 1st begins the NEW license year in Montana, required for everyone 12+

March 14, 2025

General Overview –

It is still winter here in Southwest Montana and while the last few weeks have provided some beautiful weather it still can be hit or miss with fluctuating temperatures and snow.  Several rivers provide year-round fishing (see below) and as we head into the second half of March the warmer afternoon weather can see the fish getting active.  General the fishing will be in the slower, deeper, pools and runs.  Zebra midges, Pheasant tails, Perdigons, Lightening bugs, Frenchies are all good patterns.  Fish these in a double nymph rig or trailing behind a Rubber legs, worm or stonefly pattern.  There is always the potential for a midge hatch in the afternoon so a griffith’s gnat or small Adams can catch the interest of those rising fish.  Good luck

Beaverhead River

Clark Canyon Dam to Pipe Organ Bridge – 3rd Saturday in May to Sept. 30th

Barretts Diversion to the mouth – April 1st to Sept 30th.

Big Hole River
– Closed, Open April 1st to Sept. 30th.

Jefferson River
– Open all year

The Jefferson is a combination of riffles, runs and deep pools.  While it doesn’t have the number of fish of some of the more popular rivers it makes up for that with fish size and a lack of competition from other anglers. It’s a great choice for those looking to get away from the crowd and explore.

Gallatin River
– Open all year

The Gallatin fishes well all winter, avoid the fast water and get into the slower deeper runs as that is where the fish will be.  Small flies are the ticket, sizes 18- 22, fished on a 9ft 5x leader in that deeper slow water will get you to the fish.  Productive patterns have been pheasant tails, zebra midges and lightening bugs fished in combination or behind a pat’s rubber legs.

Madison River – Open all year

The Madison provides great fishing all year long.  With the potential for shelf ice and ice dams it is best to fish the walk-wade sections of the river above Palisades access.  A double nymph rig will be your best bet for fishing right now.  If the weather warms up in the afternoon try a griffith’s gnat. A small mayfly or midge pattern, zebra midge (in black or olive) or pheasant tail trailing behind a stone fly or worm pattern can provide great results.

Missouri River –
Open all year

The Missouri river flow is regulated and can be a great option for winter fishing.  It is usually windy in March which can make dry fly-fishing tough. That said, keep an eye out on warm afternoons for fish rising to a midge hatch.  The best strategy is a double nymph rig using some combination of Pheasant tails, sowbugs, scuds or a zebra midge. As with other rivers at this time one of these nymphs in combination with a San Juan worn can increase your chances.

Rock Creek – Open all year

While renowned for its dry fly fishing it is currently nymphing season on Rock creek.  With warm afternoons bringing the potential for a midge hatch, think griffith’s gnat, most of the fishing though will be on nymphs, Spanish bullets, Perdigons, Frenchies, San Juan worms or a rubber legs. Fish the nymphs in tandem or in combination with a rubber legs or a worm.

Ruby River

The Ruby is a good choice for winter fishing, there is a good midge hatch on warm days and there can be a great Baetis starting in early April. That said access can be tough but certainly worth a try on some of the warmer days we have seen in the last week or two.

Upstream of Ruby Reservoir – Open all year

Ruby Dam to Alder Bridge – Closed, Open April 1 thru September 30th.

Alder bridge (Ruby Island FAS to the mouth) - open all year
